Hello Beach Bums!

I am happy to announce that Northern Beach Bums Club (NBBC) is back at work to offer you opportunities to visit our nearby beaches. Our Executive Committee and Trip Leaders are making lots of plans. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated for the benefit and care of your fellow Beach Bums. We all want to operate at 100% capacity and feel that everyone vaccinated would go a long way toward making that dream a reality.

With our first beach trip coming up on May 19th to Pass-A-Grille and our quarterly meeting coming up June 1st, 2021 at Savannah Center I just wanted to update everyone on a few plans for 2021.

1. We currently are only filling buses at 50% capacity. We will have a discussion regarding this policy at our quarterly meeting.

2. We have trips being set up now for the summer!
      1. July – Anastasia State Park & St. Augustine
      2. August – Manatee Beach near Holmes, FL
      3. September – Jetty Park near Cape Canaveral

3) Entertainment and Potluck is being planned for our September 7th Quarterly Meeting.

4) Our end of year party theme has been chosen, IT’S FIVE O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE. The party will be at Savannah Center on December 7th. Entertainment will be from Mike Palma.

5) Our club membership is currently closed to allow current members who have waited for well over a year an opportunity to take a trip space. Your dues have been rolled over until March 1 2022. I know you all have friends that want to join but we are not in a position to open to new members yet.

Hope to see many of you at our June 1st Quarterly meeting. Space is limited so remember to RSVP!

January 2021

Hello Beach Bums!

Goodbye 2020 and good riddance! The New Year is swinging into shape and I hope every NBBC Member is healthy and safe. Vaccinations have started slowly rolling out and the Northern Beach Bums leadership team is hopeful that we will be back to the beaches by mid 2021. Our first Quarterly Meeting for March 2nd is cancelled. We do plan to hold our 2nd Quarterly meeting at the Savannah Center at 6pm on June 1, 2021. Mark this date on your calendars and plan on attending.

Due to Covid19, and the suspension of all trips, all Membership Dues were rolled over to 2021 and we are not collecting any renewal dues for current members until next year in 2022! When we start taking trips again all members will be notified. We will need to update policies and waiver forms for 2021 but we will do that at a later date.

Northern Beach Bums Club membership is currently closed. We will not be taking on new members until after our 2021 restart. We want to give all existing members, who have patiently waited, ample opportunities to participate in beach trips before adding on any additional members. We will not be expanding our waiting list at this time either. If you know someone who is interested in our group, we suggest they check out our website at www.northernbeachbums.org . Once we re-open our waitlist we will post the information on the website. Meanwhile, in the menu bar at the top of the website home page under links for “trip archives” and also for “beaches”, we have provided useful information to plan a self guided beach day.

Our Leadership group is hopeful that between May-July we might be able to take some trips. Please keep a watch on your email for any updates. We plan to follow ALL CDC guidelines. This may include wearing masks and traveling with buses at half capacity. We are optimistic that with the vaccine combined with moderate social distancing, mask wearing, and hand washing, we will have the ability to have family visits, travel, shop, dine and relax on our beaches safely. Northern Beach Bums wants to remind you that participation in any trip is at your own risk.

Are you getting bored? You have your vaccine and now you want to get outside! We will not be taking a bus trip this February or March but here are a few ideas you might enjoy.

Blue Springs State Park, Orange City, Florida: If you wake up and it is cold outside grab a jacket and your car keys and head over to Blue Springs State Park. On a good cold morning you will see nearly 1000 manatees as you stroll around the springs. The swimming, boating and kayaking is suspended this year due to Covid but you can still visit and see the manatees. They may be limiting visitation and a small entrance fee is required to enter the state park. Check out their website:
https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/blue-spring-state-park

Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River, Florida: With a mask you can ride the trolley from downtown Clear River, Florida to Three Sisters Springs to walk the boardwalk and see the manatees. As with Blue Springs, It must be cold out for the Manatees to head into the springs. This is a nice walk with many things to see nearby in Downtown Crystal River. There may be limited visitation and a small entrance fee is required to enter the state park. Check out their website:
https://www.threesistersspringsvisitor.org/sisters

34th Annual Florida Manatee Festival Crystal River, Florida: Postponed until March 27 & 28th, 2021. Enjoy a drive to Downtown Crystal River for the 34th Annual Florida Manatee Festival. Many NBCC members will remember our trip there on January 18th 2020. There will not be many Manatees this year since it has been postponed to the warm days of March but the festival is always fun with entertainment, food, and vendor booths. Bring your walking shoes because the event is spread out throughout the entire downtown district. Check out their website for updates at:
https://www.gomanateefest.com/

Visit your NBBC website at www.northernbeachbums.org and check out the archived NBCC trips from January and February of 2019 & 2020 for inspiration. Just search under Trip Archives at the menu at top of the page. Thank you to Regina Gambino for your volunteer hours and keeping the website running!

I hope these ideas get you excited for our upcoming 2021 trips. I miss you all and wish everyone a very healthy, happy, and safe New Year!

See you at the Beach!

August 2020

With The Villages beginning to open up some recreation opportunities, I know many of you are anxious to get back to the beaches.  It is an understandable desire to return to our previous activities but COVID-19 is still with us.  Placing 56 members on a bus to the beach at this time is not safe.  NBBC will continue to follow the guidelines from CDC and we will refrain from scheduling any non-essential travel and large group activities.  Our June 4th Quarterly meeting is therefore cancelled along with our beach trips for June, July and August.  I will update everyone in August the status of our September 3rd, 2020 quarterly meeting and our September trip to Manatee Beach.

I did speak to our favorite bus driver, Randy, recently who asked me to let everyone know how much he misses us.  I hope we can find a safe way to travel because Randy, and Lamers, could really use the money.  Randy is currently furloughed and stuck at home like the rest of us.

Until it is safe to fully return to our activities, I encourage everyone to continue to be part of the solution and stay vigilant by wearing masks, washing hands, and to continue “personal distancing”.  I like the term of “personal distancing”  rather than “social distancing” , we all need to socialize.   Everyone in The Villages has done a great job of keeping the numbers down and we should continue the fight until a vaccine is created next year.  Please stay mindful that flattening the curve is not a cure.

See you at the beach soon!

Hello Beach Bums!
I hope you all are feeling good and finding safe ways to nurture your mind, body and soul. I know there are a lot of opinions on the virus and I am not an authority, doctor or scientist. This update is not meant to open a discussion. It merely is to inform you that The Northern Beach Bums Club will not be holding our September 1st Quarterly Meeting and we are not planning any beach trips currently. Placing 56 members on a bus (or even half that number) does not feel appropriate at this time. However, if you are inclined to grab your mask and venture off to the beach on your own, the Northern Beach Bums Club website has lots of information on the beaches we have visited to help you plan and enjoy your trip.
Check out our club website at www.northernbeachbums.org . On the top main bar you will find a link to “Beaches”. Click on any of the destination beaches listed and you will find a Trip Description along with helpful informative links. If you are just feeling nostalgic you can check out the “Trip Archives” from 2019 and 2020 to see where we went and what we did. I want to thank Regina Gambino, the NBBC web master, for volunteering and creating this beautiful, informative, and user friendly website. It is so much more than I expected. Thank you Regina!
NBBC is in the process of making plans for our end of year party, “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere”, currently scheduled for December 1st at Savannah Center (subject to change due to the pandemic). I will update everyone in late October. NBBC might need to consider a golf cart street party. In the meantime, I pray that you, your families, and your friends stay healthy and safe. Keep in touch!

April 2020

Keeping active is the hardest part for me right now. As many of you know I work full time as an independent contractor while I volunteer in leading the beach bums club on day trips. I currently have no business, no income, no supplements, and lots of time. We all have been doing the projects, the cleaning, and at this point we are wondering…. what else? I thought I would share a bit of what is keeping my body, mind, and soul healthy.

BODY: My priority is to keep moving. There are many live and recorded videos of yoga, meditation, dance, movement and exercise programs online that I encourage everyone to participate in. Many are free or by donation in efforts to keep us all active and safe. I recommend these programs including movementbrooklyn.com where my son is giving what he has to give while he is isolated in New York. He is teaching classes on movement. Check it out. It will surprise you that he is my son. No, I do not know where he got those good looks. I try to do a beginner level modification and play at moving. I mostly social distance golf with my husband John or with girlfriends. My favorite was to golf in the early eves but they are now closing the courses and the last tee time is 4pm. Yikes! That can be hot. I had to switch to early mornings instead. Having been a night owl I found out that early morning golf has a higher score. If you want to tee it up with John and I send me an email. My bike is ready for bike rides and from Amazon I purchased a bright green vest so I hope to be seen. John cannot do the rides so I am looking for partners. I made a resolution to do more walking but have been too lazy and have not followed through with that one.

MIND: I am not comfortable with takeout food and have only made a pick up once in the last 40 days. I am cooking every day, and gaining weight every day. Butter and carbohydrates are off the chart! To try to counter my eating frenzy and keep my mind healthy, my family has added a ZOOM happy hour at least once every other week. The largest gathering was 30 of us. On the plus side, I see my sons more often than pre-pandemic. They now have the time to chat with the family that they did not have when there was work. I highly recommend facetime or skype for one on one chats or ZOOM for large group gatherings with friends and family as often as you can. I find I will go all week long without seeing myself in a mirror and then just before joining a live chat I will put on makeup. One of our members recently told me how excited she was to put on make-up for the delivery guy from publix! That is both hysterical and true because live social interaction is extremely important to healthy minds. The large Zoom happy hours are fun and if you are close to your neighbors you should put a group happy hour together and don’t forget the Sangria.

SOUL: I record and then watch lots of TV shows that sadly will be going into re-runs because they cannot film anything since mid march. Big news is for tomorrow April 18th 8:00pm, I cannot wait;
One World: Together at Home. https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/connect/togetherathome/
Do you remember live-aid with Robin Williams & Billy Crystal? This is what I imagine tomorrow will be like and hope everyone catches a moment. There will be live streaming of bands and singers from their homes for hours and then 2 hours on Prime time television. Everyone who is anyone will be involved. I heard the Rolling Stones are going to perform! From the website you can also link into hundreds of performances of home-bound recordings from some of the biggest stars that are streamed live daily. John Legend – Bridge over Trouble Water – was fabulous. The concert is to globally thank and support first responders and health professionals who we are relying upon to get us through this. I try every day to take time and encourage others to say thank you to all the essential workers who do not work from home and do not get this heroes recognition. Truck drivers, grocers, warehouse distributors, electricians, plumbers, farmers, food packers, take out restaurant workers, mechanics, radio station/news announcers, TP makers and more. We would not survive without them putting themselves at risk.

So that is what I am doing. Counting my blessings and trying to keep my body, mind and soul strong because as my father (from the generation of the great depression) always would say, “This too shall pass”.

“Thank You” to every Beach Bum and Villages neighbor for doing your part by staying home and keeping John and I healthy and safe. I appreciate it and am doing the same for you.

See you at the Beach!
Kathy

March 12, 2020

Our Executive Committee has been following the recommendations of the W.H.O, CDC and White House this week in regards to COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Based upon their recommendation that social distancing reduces the risk of contracting and spreading this virus, NBBC is cancelling our bus trips for March 19, April 23 and May 20th until future notice.
We are working with Lamers Bus line regarding our March 19th trip and we will be receiving a refund due to the pandemic. Please be patient, it may take 2-3 weeks to get the money in the mail and we will send refunds to everyone who signed up for the March trip. In regards to the April trip, we have not cashed those checks and all checks have been voided and shredded.
Regarding your dues that were recently deposited, for every month that we are delayed from taking a trip we will extend your membership and delay our renewal month next year equally for time loss. I will update you regarding our June 2nd meeting and our June trip at the end of April.
I wish you all good health, stay safe, and encourage everyone to do their part to help isolate this disease and not spread the virus. If we all participate in not giving this virus any hosts, I am confident we will prevail and be off to the beaches again very soon.
Take care and see you soon,

Kathy Eastman – President Northern Beach Bums Club
